Why Huffington Post Thinks Poor Black Women are Ugly

In his Huffington Post review of Ava Duvernay’s independent film Middle of Nowhere, Dr. Lloyd Sederer made a statement so insane, it made Mitt Romney’s Binder Full of Women sound like if you’re happy and you know it.

Middle of Nowhere tracks Ruby, played by Emayatzy Corinealdi, while she holds her man down during his lengthy prison sentence. Like many people, some of my family members spent time in prison. Of course, I immediately became interested in seeing this movie, and anything written about, it until I saw this:

Who do You Think You're Talking To?

“I wonder: Were the cast too beautiful? But who wouldn't want to look at Emayatzy Corinealdi all day, or her hulk of a husband [Played by Omari Hardwick], or the man who later declares that he wants to be part of her future? Or her sister, Rosie [Edwina Findley], who still has the luster of youth. Even their mother [Played by Lorraine Toussaint] seemed to me more like a high school principal than a poor black woman. Maybe their attractiveness makes them more accessible to an audience like me?”---Dr. Lloyd Sederer

The Blacker the Berry the Sweeter the Juice!

What the what?!!!! Dr. Sederer what are you saying? FYI this man is the medical director of the New York State Office Mental Health, and he obviously doesn’t know any better than to think “poor black women” can’t be beautiful! Some of the most beautiful women in the WORLD are poor women of color. Furthermore, there are fine-ass poor black men in the hood, in prison, and in college. Thank you very much! LL Cool J wasn’t always rich. What we see on TV, and in magazines, is not usually real. I don’t think Dr. Sederer was being racist, at least I hope he wasn’t, but I do think his views are elitist. I believe he would be shocked by the notion of a beautiful poor white woman as much as a poor black woman.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say, I doubt Duvernay used attractive actors to tell this story for the entertainment of “well-off white men.” Please tell me what you think. Shout out to the poor beautiful people.

This made me laugh so hard, because (when I was in college) one of my economics professors once told me that the biggest nut jobs were in the Psychology department. You'd think that a shrink would not require a reality check himself, but there it is. LOL.
